Go Figure
Life-Drawing Show

Throughout history, the human body has been of central interest to the artist. The figure, a beautifully unique and highly complex series of forms and remains an enduring theme within the fine arts. It ignites both inspiration and intrigue; the task of mastering the various shapes, gestures and positions of the body, is arguably one of the most challenging skills an artist develops. More often than not, the best way to learn about rendering the complex human form is to draw directly from life. This involves careful observation, combined with whatever knowledge of anatomy is available to the observer. As each body remains entirely different, the artist is continually faced with a new set of challenges. Through patience and the ability to persevere, solutions arise, sometimes seemingly defying logic in the process. While most artists begin as students and learn this drawing exercise in class, others carefully observe and do their best to render what they see. Later, interpretation and play build upon this base. Due to ones own curiosity, the complexity and variety of the human figure, it becomes difficult to truly exhaust the potential of this exercise. Resulting from this passionate curiosity, the practice of figure drawing has given rise to the vital need for open and institutional drawing groups among communities. This show highlights the vital and active community of figure drawing groups, and their importance in the Toronto area.
